Our Story and Purpose…
The Shook Home’s legacy began with John H. Shook (1844-1916), a prominent banker, civic leader, and philanthropist from Greencastle, Pennsylvania. His profound commitment to community welfare was formalized through a bequest in his last will and testament in 1918, which provided the initial funding dedicated to the “care, maintenance and attention of adult persons.”
For over a century, the core principle of “quality care for the elderly” guided the facility, establishing high standards of care for its residents. This enduring commitment to serving the aging population continues today through the evolution into The John H. Shook Foundation.
Mission Statement
The John H. Shook Foundation is committed to providing financial support for benevolent care and community programs and services that address elders’ needs in Franklin County and South Central Pennsylvania.
Vision Statement
A community where every senior benefits from access to supporting resources and innovative programs which enhance their well-being, dignity and opportunity to thrive.
The Foundation Today…
The John H. Shook Foundation is a private non-operating foundation dedicated to continuing the legacy of John H. Shook by making grants to non-profit organizations that align with our mission. Our purpose is to distribute funds to public charities and other qualified nonprofit organizations working in health and human services for the benefit and support of the elderly population in Franklin County and surrounding areas.
We seek to improve the quality of life, well-being, and independence of the growing aging population. Our work addresses the critical challenges aging adults face, including access to quality care, physical endurance, and social isolation, which can often lead to mobility decline, anxiety, and cognitive deficit. The Foundation also recognizes the critical workforce shortage facing the aging services sector and supports enhanced recruitment and retention strategies.
By functioning as a private non-operating foundation, we focus primarily on strategic grant-making, ensuring a lasting and impactful philanthropic legacy that upholds John H. Shook’s original vision.
